Here is why you don’t need a coach

2014 is drawing to an end, and your inbox abounds with messages like this:

[some message to stir pain: you obviously haven’t achieved your Internet marketing/business goals, you’re still jumping from one thing to another/haven’t found “the one” method for you, self-doubt, annoyed partner, etc, etc, etc,…

… then offering the “obvious” solution, namely COACHING. ]

Then of course they also tell you that ALL were successful people have a coach, and that therefore it is OBVIOUS that you must have a coach.

I’m here to tell you otherwise:

in all likelihood (99.9% certainty;-) YOU DO NOT NEED A COACH!coach

Here’s why:

look at this definition of coaching:

“helping to identify the skills and capabilities that are within the person, and enabling them to use them to the best of their ability”

now, this is VERY DIFFERENT from for example managing, training, mentoring or counselling.

In fact, here is the full definition from Wikipedia:

  • Managing is making sure people do what they know how to do.
  • Training is teaching people to do what they don’t know how to do.
  • Mentoring is showing people how the people who are really good at doing something do it.
  • Counselling is helping people come to terms with issues they are facing.
  • Coaching is none of these – it is helping to identify the skills and capabilities that are within the person, and enabling them to use them to the best of their ability.”

in all likelihood (99.9% certainty;-) you DO NOT have the skills and capabilities inside you, and when you don’t, no amount of coaching enables you to use them (and the non-existing ones) to the best of your ability!

Now you might be thinking

“okay, training it is, because

‘Training is teaching people to do what they don’t know how to do’”

you are of course right,…

… except, unfortunately pretty much all courses delivered online teach you to KNOW what you don’t know, but they don’t teach you to DO what you don’t know.

Like it or not, the ONLY way to learn to DO something, is to actually DO it, or in other words:

My friend Achim put it beautifully the other day:

you can’t just tell someone about the physical-pain-inducing devastation of heartbreak… You have to experience it yourself!

Now here’s the kicker:

to go from KNOWING to DOING, requires a fundamental shift in thinking or attitude.

And until you’ve done that one shift, you keep wondering why the heck all your efforts are in vain!

Fortunately, it’s a SINGLE shift that is required!

For example, at our sales workshops, we see this principle in action every single time!

The top performers (and hence the top earners) are ALWAYS the ones who have already done that fundamental shift in thinking!

Whilst everybody else sits in the room, quite possibly takes notes, even participates, and yet, the moment they leave the room, go back to the status quo (a.k.a. performing nowhere near at the same level as the top performers)

to show you how important this one fundamental shift is, here is a quote from an entrepreneur who is worth £150 million (a little over $230 million) and who employs 7,000 people worldwide:

“The most important thing I’ve done this year is sort myself out.

I’m talking very, very basic but absolutely major.

I realised I had some very big problems I’d ignored for years and it was getting out of hand.”

Care to guess what that one fundamental shift is, and who the entrepreneur is?

All shall be revealed in time for Christmas!;-)

  1. I cheated and found who the entrepreneur is. My guess is he decided to work a bit less and work on being a bit more healthy.

  2. Looking forward to hearing what the shift was!
    Have a great holiday!

  3. This is the first time I’ve heard that you don’t need coaching. But like all your content, it makes so much sense it would have to make dollars.

  4. I thought I was already buried deep in training, not sure which pile to dig into next… so Mentoring is needed?!
Nah, action and doing is next for me NOW. To Finally Learn for real.

No idea who has 150 million… hope it is revealed soon but not certain it will be as helpful as a No Yuck Single Shift.

  5. I have no idea who has such wealth & took so long to sort themselves out.

To have accumulated such a number of people to work with one would need to generate that sort of annual surplus. Talk about commitment. That would raise issues for laid back spirits like me. Obviously the money drives many people… but with that amount, I hope there is another driver or even other drivers. Caring, sharing, learning, growing, planning a legacy all come to mind.. None of these things are obvious life changers, but they sure make life a lot more fun.

Hope you are all having a great fun filled festives… we are. Cheers Phil Tozer
